Kerala in December: What to Expect, and What to Book Early

One of the brightest and busiest months. Here's how to enjoy it without the crowds deciding for you.

December is when Kerala is at its most comfortable and its most in demand. Skies are typically clear, the humidity eases and the highlands turn cold at night. It's also when prices rise, private drivers and the best stays book out and popular places fill with visitors.

If you want December, plan early and choose experiences that suit a busy season.

---

  • Coast and backwaters: dry, warm days and comfortable evenings.
  • Munnar and the hills: clear days and cold mornings and nights. Bring layers and a warm jacket.
  • Rain: less likely than in the preceding weeks, but night showers can linger early in the month, and the driest, most settled weather usually comes in February and March.

These are typical patterns, not forecasts.

---

Theyyam season in North Kerala. The ritual art of North Malabar is in full swing from roughly October or November to May, with many performances concentrated between December and February. It takes place in Kannur and Kasaragod, so it's a separate leg. Theyyam Festival Access

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Held in Kochi in edition years, usually from December to March. The most recent edition ran from December 2025 to March 2026. Check the Kochi Biennale Foundation for the next edition's dates.

---

Late December and the New Year week are the tightest of the year. Expect to compete for:

  • Boutique stays and tree houses
  • Private drivers and vehicles
  • Home hosts and small-capacity experiences

We recommend enquiring as early as you can. The earlier we know your dates, the better your options.

---

  • Start early. Dawn treks and tea-estate sunrises are quiet even in peak season.
  • Choose homes over sights. Cooking in a family kitchen or a canoe in a village canal stays calm when the big attractions are packed.
  • Travel privately. A private vehicle means you leave when you want and avoid fixed-departure queues.
  • Consider the shoulders. The first half of December and the weeks after mid-January are quieter than Christmas and New Year.

Is December a good time to visit Kerala?

It's one of the best for weather, and one of the busiest. Book early.

How cold is Munnar in December?

Cold at night and in the early morning. Bring a warm layer, a jacket and closed shoes.

Popular sights can be busy, particularly around Christmas and New Year. A private, early-start itinerary avoids most of it.

Can I see Theyyam in December?

Yes. December is within the Theyyam season, which runs from roughly October or November to May. It takes place in the north, so plan a dedicated leg.

When should I book for December?

As early as possible. Enquiring is free and doesn't commit you.

What about Christmas in Kerala?

Kerala has a large Christian community, and Christmas is widely celebrated. Fort Kochi is a good place to be. ---
