Eravikulam's rolling grasslands and rare Nilgiri tahr, on a guided walk through genuinely protected terrain, led by someone who can identify the birdcall you'd otherwise miss and the plant you'd otherwise step past without a second look.

Eravikulam National Park Walk: what to know before you go

Above Munnar, the tea gives way to a different kind of landscape: rolling, treeless grassland and rocky slopes that stretch to the sky. This is the high shola-grassland country of Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr, a sturdy mountain goat that lives on these cliffs and, unusually for a wild animal, can often be seen at close range.

The walk takes place in the park's Rajamala tourism zone. It's a managed visit: entry is permit-based, group sizes are limited and the routes are regulated, so you go with a guide who knows the rules and the terrain. You may see tahr on the slopes, hear birdsong and feel the wind, and the views across the High Range are wide and dramatic. Eravikulam is also famous for the neelakurinji, which blooms across these hills only once every twelve years.

Two practical things matter. First, the park closes every year for the tahr calving season, typically for a couple of months in February and March, so we check dates before we plan. Second, tickets sell out in peak season, so early planning helps. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the landscape usually delivers on its own. And a small clarification: this experience is set in Eravikulam. Silent Valley National Park is a separate rainforest reserve in a different part of Kerala.

In their own words

What guests notice first

Did you actually see the Nilgiri tahr?

We did, closer than I expected, this sturdy mountain goat just standing on a rock ledge, completely unbothered by us. Our guide said they're one of the only wild animals here you can reasonably expect to see at that range.

What surprised you about the landscape itself?

That the tea just stops and this treeless, rolling grassland takes over, completely different scenery from anywhere else we'd been in Munnar. Wide open, windy, almost otherworldly after days of tea-covered hills.

Did your guide clear up any confusion about the park?

Yes, actually, I'd read about Silent Valley somewhere and assumed that's where we were. Our guide corrected me straight away, this is Eravikulam, a completely different park, and explained the difference clearly enough that I finally understood which was which.

Was there a detail about the flowers that stuck with you?

That the neelakurinji only blooms here once every twelve years, and our guide had actually seen the last bloom himself. Standing in grassland that transforms completely once a decade, and having missed it by a few years, gave the whole walk an odd, patient kind of magic.
