Travel Guide

Kochi to Munnar, Done Slowly

About 110 km and roughly four hours, if you rush. If you don't, it's the first chapter of the journey.

  • Distance: roughly 110 km from Kochi.
  • Drive time: about 4 hours without stops, depending on traffic and weather.
  • Best way: a private car and driver. There's no practical direct rail link, and the road climbs through winding ghat sections that are easier with a driver who knows them.
  • Best time to leave: early morning, so you reach the hills before the afternoon haze or rain.

---

Most people drive from Kochi to Munnar as fast as they can and arrive tired. The road is not a corridor to be cleared. It crosses rubber, banana and spice country, rises through waterfalls and ends in tea.

Break it into three parts and the same drive becomes a morning, a lunch and an arrival.

---

Part 1: Leave Kochi (8 to 9 am). Clear the city early. Your driver meets you at your stay or at the airport.

Part 2: The green middle (mid-morning). Stops that suit the road:

  • Roadside tea and a short break at a local eatery.

Part 3: The waterfalls (late morning). The road passes Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, which are at their fullest in and after the monsoon. Short stops, no hiking.

Part 5: The climb into tea (afternoon). The last hour is the best: tea estates on every hill, cooler air and the first mist.

Arrival (late afternoon). Check in, and a Spice Plantation Walk at golden hour, or nothing at all.

---

  • Motion sickness: the hill section is winding. Sit in front if you're prone, and don't eat heavily beforehand.
  • Don't drive after dark. The hill road is slower and less comfortable at night. We time journeys to arrive by daylight.
  • Rain: in heavy monsoon, stretches can be slow. Your driver will adjust the stops.
  • Luggage: 1 to 3 guests travel in an Innova Crysta; 4 or more in a Force Urbania. Both have space for luggage.
  • Cold: Munnar mornings and nights can be cold from December to February. Keep a layer within reach.

---

Cochin International Airport is the usual arrival point. We can meet you at arrivals and start the drive directly, or, if you land late or tired, begin with a night in Fort Kochi and leave the next morning.
