7 Days in Kerala, Without the Tourist Circuit
Starting point only. Change any day, stay or activity once it loads.
Load this planFort Kochi, the misty highlands and a village on the canals. Private throughout, slow by design.
Most seven-day Kerala itineraries follow the same loop: Cochin, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, with a houseboat at the end. It works. It also means a lot of time in a car and very little time with anyone who lives there.
This itinerary keeps the three places that deserve a week (Fort Kochi, Munnar and the Kuttanad backwaters) and changes what you do in them. Fewer stops. Longer mornings. Meals in homes rather than restaurants. One private vehicle and one driver for the entire journey.
It is a framework, not a fixed script. Everything below can be swapped, slowed down or extended on Design Your Journey.
---
| Days | Where | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Fort Kochi | Arrive gently. History, harbour, food. |
| 3 to 4 | Munnar | Cool air, tea estates, dawn light. |
| 5 to 7 | Kuttanad and Alleppey backwaters | Village life by canoe, kitchen and paddy field. |
Typical drive times: Kochi to Munnar about 4 hours; Munnar to Alleppey about 4 to 5 hours; Alleppey to Kochi airport about 2 hours. Times vary with traffic and weather.
---
Your driver meets you at Cochin International Airport. Check in to your stay in Fort Kochi and rest. Late afternoon: Chinese Fishing Nets, Kochi at the water's edge as the light drops. Where the pace slows: no schedule before the afternoon, whatever time your flight lands. What's private: your vehicle, your driver, your own pace.
Morning: Fort Kochi Heritage Walk, then Mattancherry Palace and Dutch Heritage and the Oldest Jewish Synagogue. Afternoon: Street Food Trail, Kochi through the old market lanes. Where the pace slows: a long, unhurried lunch before the afternoon walk.
A slow morning, then the road climbs into the Western Ghats. We build in stops (waterfalls, a plantation, a roadside tea) rather than racing the clock. Late afternoon: Spice Plantation Walk, Munnar. Stay: a plantation-view stay in the hills. Where the pace slows: no sightseeing queue; arrival is the point.
Dawn: Munnar Dawn Trek as the mist lifts off the valley. Breakfast: Tea Estate Breakfast, Munnar. Late morning: Tea Factory Visit and Plucking. Night: Stargazing Night, High Range if the sky is clear. Where the pace slows: a free afternoon, deliberately empty.
Down from the hills and into the green flatlands of Kuttanad, where much of the land lies below sea level. Evening: Shikara Sunset Cruise. Where the pace slows: the evening is yours. No programme after the sunset.
Morning: Canoe Ride, Village Canals through the narrow canals the larger boats cannot enter. Late morning: Coconut Farm and Toddy Tapping and a Toddy Tapper's Home Breakfast. Lunch: Village Kitchen Meal, Local Home. Afternoon: Paddy Field Walk, Kuttanad or Village Walk, Kuttanad. Where the pace slows: the long lunch, at a table that isn't a restaurant's.
Dawn: Sunrise on the Backwaters. Then: a relaxed drive to Cochin International Airport (about 2 hours). We suggest booking an onward flight from the afternoon.

December to March gives the clearest highland views, with February and March the driest. In the monsoon, keep the route and swap the trek for a slower plantation day. See Best Time to Visit Kerala.

It is enough to experience three very different sides of the state properly: a historic port, a hill country and the backwaters. It is not enough to see everything, and we would rather you didn't try.
Fort Kochi, Munnar and Kuttanad cover heritage, hills and water with the least backtracking. Add Thekkady if you want wildlife, or Varkala if you want a beach finish.
No. The village canoe and home stays here give you more time on the water, and closer to people, than a standard houseboat cruise. If you do want a houseboat night, tell us and we'll build one in.
Roughly 10 to 11 hours across the week, spread over two longer drives and short transfers.
